About Emma Hogan

I'm Emma Hogan, a wildlife artist based in Portishead, near Bristol. I create emotionally connected wildlife portraiture.
Wildlife has always brought me a deep sense of joy, particularly those fleeting moments when you unexpectedly encounter an animal in the wild. That feeling, quiet, grounding and unforgettable stays with you for life. It's this sense of connection that I aim to capture in my work, creating drawings that feel like a moment paused in time.
I work in realism, paying close attention to detail and expression, especially the eyes, which I believe are key to giving an animal its presence and sense of life. My drawings are created using coloured pencil on Fabriano Artistico watercolour paper and drafting film, materials that allow me to build delicate layers while retaining clarity and precision.
Living in Canada for three years was a formative experience. Seeing unfamiliar species in a completely different landscape was incredibly special, and it deepened my appreciation for wildlife observation. At the same time, I found myself missing the calm, familiar singsong of British birds - a sound that still feels like home.
I now work full time as an artist, something I feel very grateful for. Much of my inspiration still comes from simple moments: walking in the countryside, spotting a bird or animal I've never seen before, and quietly taking it all in. Those experiences continue to shape both my process and the work itself.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my work.
